some nights i stay up cashing in my bad luck ;; [ CLOSED ]
Who: finnick odair & katniss everdeen
What: katniss talks to finnick about her feelings on gale moving out and all the situations surrounding it
When: a day after gale moves into the roadhouse
Where: by the lake
Rating: pg
Gale moved out, and Katniss was left with a torrent of emotions that threatened to strangle her. She didn't know what to do, how to tell him she never wanted him to leave without seeming selfish. She wanted to have both he and Peeta near, close, so she could keep an eye on them, make sure they were safe. Because she needed them both, in different ways. Peeta coming back had thrown her for a loop all on its own because she and Gale had started to settle into a routine, into something they might have had the chance for back in Panem if the games had never happened to her to begin with. She had struggled with guilt for Peeta then, and she was struggling with guilt for Gale now. She was torn between two choices so different that she didn't know how she could ever bear to choose. Until Finnick returned, she had no one to talk to about it. There was Lancelot, and he was a good friend, but Finnick already knew the situation between the three of them. Lancelot would need an explanation, and how could she possibly start to explain something like that?
She caught Finnick early in the day and asked him if he'd have some time where they could just talk, they talked out a meeting place and time, and she spent the rest of the day trying to decipher herself. How could she talk about it unless she figured out a way to describe it? She wanted Gale to come back, more than almost anything - second only to having Prim here with her. She took a walk around the city, clearing her head, alleviating herself from the smell of warm bread and other distractions... She even avoided eating cheese buns. No distractions. Nothing to make her thoughts biased one way or the other - though that had gotten much harder in the time she and Gale had spent alone together here.
After a long walk and nothing getting any better, she decided just to head to the lake early. When Finnick arrived, she was laying on the bank, dragging her fingers through the water where all the plants were, eyes closed. The familiarity of the fronds and the sound of water lapping against the bank took her back home, to those times when her father taught her to swim, and gave her peace for a short while.
