[ Tris is out doing what she's been doing periodically since Tobias arrived (not counting the time with the unfortunate sweaters during which she mostly refused to step out of the Welcome Hall): trying to get used to being in Asgard. The culture shock hasn't entirely worn off yet. Too many things are too drastically different. But it helps that she's been largely left alone, and that she's been able to learn new things right off the bat, even though she's not all sure how to feel about healing powers.

But she's once again out exploring, getting a handle on where things are without always having to look at the map. In particular, she's looking at shops and businesses, trying to gauge if she could get a job somewhere - she's never had to work before, but if she wants to move out of the Welcome Hall, she'll have to, and sooner rather than later, at that.

Aside from that, there's practice. Whenever she spies an opportunity, she's probably going to try and climb a building up to the roof, and practice her balance. No free-running expert yet, here, but one may spie a short, skinny teenage girl all in black on a rooftop as well as on the street, for sure. She'll wander around and occasionally just sit down and watch whatever's going on in the street from above.

[She doesn't like the thought that she might be too young for anything. The way she sees it, if you're old enough to be able and allowed to shoot people, you're old enough for just about anything. But on the other hand, she's not sure she'd want to work at a bar to begin with. What makes her frown is something else.]

School?

[She was done with that months ago, why would she go back? Come to think of it though, maybe that was just another thing that was different in this place.]

How long do people go to school around here?

[Something's wrong. He can tell by the way she's looking at him with her brows lifted and a frown on her face. Dean weighs his options. Sure, he could ask, but that might open the flood gates for a conversation he doesn't want to have.]

Usually? 12 years. Not counting college. You can drop out and get a GED but I'm not sure that applies to Asgard. It's not your typical school. It teaches subjects that aren't really on the roster in real-time.

[12 years and then some? That's probably twice as long as anything she's heard of from home, though she supposes the Erudite never stop learning, at least. She considers it, takes a drink, and decides not to try to explain where she's from. Asgard, present time, that's more important now, isn't it? She'll try to focus on that instead.]

Like what?

For starters, I teach weapons training there. There's a lot of other subjects, most of which you wouldn't see in normal schools and aren't necessarily boring.

[That was for damn sure. If a school like this had existed where Dean was growing up he might not have dropped out when he did and teamed up with his dad to take down monsters. He might have gone through a whole term. It just didn't work out that way. Most places like those had fees and no places were like the one here. Not back home.]

[She considers this. Even though she's not bad, more training isn't a bad idea.]

I want to move out of the welcome hall though. That's why I went looking in the first place. I don't think going to school is going to give me money for a place to stay.

[Not even if they split the rent.]

What's wrong with the god houses? Sure, they're assholes but they don't interfere there. Not normally.

[Dean had been in his own god house for a while and never had any problems. He was able to keep to himself and have some privacy when he wanted it and even got to meet a few people who were now friends.]

There's nothing wrong with it.

[There isn't - even if the friends she's made from her own house don't live there anymore for the most part. Tris may be hiding behind her cup for a moment to give herself an excuse for a pause.]

It's more that my boyfriend's here too and we'd like to not live in different districts.

[I mean, really. She didn't look much older than thirteen but maybe she had a baby face. Dean wasn't sure. Kids these days hit puberty a lot faster than they used to but he's sure his dad and Bobby had similar feelings.]

[She sets the cup down.]

I'm sixteen.

Really? Huh.

[Dean knows better than to tell a teenager that they look younger than they are or that they're still kids. So instead he plays along.]

If you don't mind bars we need a bus boy. You can pick up after patrons and spend time with me behind the counter and in the kitchen.

[She's used to it - but that also means she already knows that he judged her to be younger from her looks. At least it seems like he's dropping it, and for that she's- well, not grateful. But less irritated? That works, right? Tris nods.]

Sure, why not.

[And on second thought-]

Think I can still go to school next to that?

[That's why Dean offered. Maybe other places had no wiggle room for schooling but he did and he wanted her to learn as much as she could while she was here. Asgard was no excuse to miss out.]

We'll work something out.

Great.

[She smiles. This... this could be good, right? It seems like she had a lot left to learn around here, anyway.]

Is that what you do back home, too? Teach people?

[In a way, he did make her think of the Dauntless. Less ink from what she could see, but that didn't say much.]

Not exactly.

[Back home he was more of a lone ranger, at least with the exception of Sam being his partner in crime and Cas occasionally playing his copilot. What he did back home was very different.]

This is something new I'm trying. I figure it can't hurt to make sure people here are prepared for the worst.

Can't argue with that. Being prepared is important.

["Preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as failure to act in the midst of fear-" she just about has the lesson memorized, even if it seems like she heard it a lifetime ago.]

But it's not like the whole city is full of fighters, is it?

Most of the city has something up their sleeve.

[Everyone he'd met had a knack for fighting or something that made their trip here worthwhile. The gods weren't messing around.]

Huh. So I guess they do have a reason for the people they bring.

[Not that she wasn't expecting this, but it's different to hear as much from another Traveller.]

You gotta figure. It just pushed my buttons when they pull in kids.

[Kids like Jamie and Jesse who had their whole lives ahead of them and didn't need to be bothered with the crap that was at play here.]
