CHRISTMAS IN JULY, PART TWO;
Days 478-479 (July 13-16th)

Day 478 (July 14): Following a network post announcing an impending attack by ice giants and Thiazi's declaration to the city, the fight begins when a small swarm of pixies descends upon the city, no more than eight inches tall and the definition of "glass cannons." They create chaos however they can: shaking snow onto people, carrying off weapons, and attacking directly if approached without an easy exit. Their teeth are curved like fangs and razor-sharp.

While the pixies stir the city up, the frost giants begin to load the golems up into the catapults. Two by two, the massive ice creatures come crashing - literally - into the city. They land hard and inaccurately, as the engineers' defenses on the city walls keep the giants from approaching too quickly, and some golems seem to be damaged already by the same defenses as they land. The pixies seem to lose interest around sunset (though you may find one or two hidden and sleeping in a snowbank if you look hard enough - they'll attack aggressively if woken), but the fights with the golems continue well into the night, until all in the city are dispatched. Where the pixies turn into snow, the golems transform into large hunks of ice after they are killed.
Day 479 (July 15-16): At sunrise, the pixies ascend from their hiding places and scatter, doing their best to break into homes to attack people directly. Today, anyone who finds himself bitten will begin to feel and act strangely.

Ice golems continue to come crashing into the city throughout the morning. All of the original ones slain, Thiazi begins creating more on the spot: while they may be more numerous, they are weaker, and many have odd physical defects. Some are missing arms, and others have extra heads. Following an attack by the strike team, the number itself will begin to thin considerably as one of the catapults is damaged and the other is destroyed completely.

Just before sunset, Thiazi delivers a final message and makes a hasty retreat with her entourage of frost giants. The spell responsible for the odd weather breaks the moment that she passes the threshold a half mile out, and all remaining pixies and golems in the city immediately, mid-action, turn to snow and ice.

By midnight, the city is thawed completely.

[ Upon seeing Jamie enter the alley, make his approach, and then start speaking to him, the Doctor draws his arms in closer to himself almost instinctively, as if doing that will hide the bite marks on his hands and forearms.

He peers up at the other man, a vague expression of confusion on his face, but beneath that, it's almost as though there's something hostile lurking under the surface. Why he's feeling that way, he can't quite tell, but just the mere fact that Jamie's approached him is enough to set him on edge. ]

I'm-

[ He starts to say that he's fine, but he bites the words off even as he starts, almost as though whatever thought was in his head abruptly vanished and isn't coming back. But then, after a moment of blankness that should have been startling to him, his train of thought comes back. ]

Fine. I'm fine, but you shouldn't be out here. It isn't safe.

[He might not have yet properly seen those bite marks, but the way the Doctor draws in on himself and then the way he goes blank a few moments later is more than enough to get his concern to shift to outright worry. It gets him to hurry the last few steps over to the Doctor's side and crouch down by his side, reaching out to try and grasp his shoulder as he does so.]

No, I daresay you're not fine. You're right about it being not safe, though. Come on, we need to get ye out of here and to a healer before those pixies recharge and have another go at us.

[ The Doctor practically shoots to attention the second Jamie lays his hand on his shoulder. His eyebrows furrow, and he looks as though he's all but glaring at the Scotsman. ]

I said that I'm fine. Nothing's wrong. I just want to be left alone.

[ Yes, of course, left alone to sit in this deserted alleyway. It doesn't make sense, but right now, he's not caring about making sense. ]

And I've got no use for a healer.

[ Maybe on a more normal day, he'd be receptive to Jamie's efforts, but right now, he's just feeling more than a bit ill and not very keen on moving from his spot. ]

[Fortunately - or unfortunately as the case may be - Jamie's not about to give in that easily, and while he does take his hand back off the Doctor's shoulder, it's only to put it on his hip.]

Oh, don't ye now? Then tell me why you're sitting in an alleyway in the middle of a fight with wee bite marks on ye?

[He's more than close enough to see those now, and he gestures towards the most visible one he can see.]

I told you, it's nothing. They're only bites, and I've had worse.

[ He's not budging from this spot, no matter what Jamie says. ]

[He would be like that, wouldn't he. Jamie frowns, not only because of that, but because it's starting to look like the Doctor's not going to budge. Bites or no bites, he's fairly certain that's not a good idea.]

Fine, then, they're nothing. That's still not explaining why you're just sitting here, Doctor. If you're not hurt, why are ye out where anything can get at ye?

[ Of course he would. Stubborn, unmovable when he wants to be... Oh, and let's not forget uncooperative. ]

Can't someone just stop to recover for a bit? That's all this is, really.

[ And in case Jamie wondered, he hated admitting that was why he stopped in the first place. ]

Nothing's coming down here, anyway. It's safer than being out there.

[ He pointed out at the street just past the alley. ]

Aye, right up until those wee beasties come back.

[And he gestures as well, over to a spot on that street where one of the pixies is flying by. Luckily, that one doesn't seem to notice them, but Jamie still thinks his point is fairly clear.]

Just because they've not come down here yet doesn't mean they won't soon. Look, inside's not much better, but there's still less chance of them coming in there.

[ He opens his mouth as if to say it doesn't look as though they're coming back, but before he can even get out the first few words, a smallish swarm of pixies comes flying down the alley and straight towards them. ]

Oh, bugger, here comes another swarm of them.

[ He pushes himself up onto his feet and glances back at Jamie. ]

Come on then, let's find a house or building, somewhere they can't get us.

[ That's assuming they manage to avoid that oncoming swarm, of course. ]

[That was exactly what he's afraid of. Well, that and there's no way of knowing when this group can do that light-explosion thing they seem to be able to from time to time. If it were a smaller group, he might see what he can do to try and confuse them, try and draw their attention and see if they could keep up. But with as many as there were right now, he's not sure some of them wouldn't go after the Doctor instead. So the best thing right now might be something a bit more straightforward, and his eyes flick over to the Doctor briefly to see if he's thinking the same way.]

Run?

Yeah, run. Definitely run.

[ That's really all they can do right now, although the Doctor has no plans on leaving Jamie to get attacked; he's already got bites on his arms, so what's a few more? In fact, if it came to it and the pixies did start coming after them, he'd run in the opposite direction of Jamie, just to draw them away.

Better him than someone else, he thinks. But as it is, the pixies aren't really doing much of anything except flying at them, and they've got a bit of a lead, so the Doctor nods at Jamie and starts running. ]
