CHRISTMAS IN JULY, PART TWO;
Days 478-479 (July 13-16th)
- Day 478 (July 14)
- Following a network post announcing an impending attack by ice giants and Thiazi's declaration to the city, the fight begins when a small swarm of pixies descends upon the city, no more than eight inches tall and the definition of "glass cannons." They create chaos however they can: shaking snow onto people, carrying off weapons, and attacking directly if approached without an easy exit. Their teeth are curved like fangs and razor-sharp.
While the pixies stir the city up, the frost giants begin to load the golems up into the catapults. Two by two, the massive ice creatures come crashing - literally - into the city. They land hard and inaccurately, as the engineers' defenses on the city walls keep the giants from approaching too quickly, and some golems seem to be damaged already by the same defenses as they land. The pixies seem to lose interest around sunset (though you may find one or two hidden and sleeping in a snowbank if you look hard enough - they'll attack aggressively if woken), but the fights with the golems continue well into the night, until all in the city are dispatched. Where the pixies turn into snow, the golems transform into large hunks of ice after they are killed. - Day 479 (July 15-16)
- At sunrise, the pixies ascend from their hiding places and scatter, doing their best to break into homes to attack people directly. Today, anyone who finds himself bitten will begin to feel and act strangely.
Ice golems continue to come crashing into the city throughout the morning. All of the original ones slain, Thiazi begins creating more on the spot: while they may be more numerous, they are weaker, and many have odd physical defects. Some are missing arms, and others have extra heads. Following an attack by the strike team, the number itself will begin to thin considerably as one of the catapults is damaged and the other is destroyed completely.
Just before sunset, Thiazi delivers a final message and makes a hasty retreat with her entourage of frost giants. The spell responsible for the odd weather breaks the moment that she passes the threshold a half mile out, and all remaining pixies and golems in the city immediately, mid-action, turn to snow and ice.
By midnight, the city is thawed completely.

[Ellie keeps a wary eye on a pixie as it makes its way towards her, teeth bared until it gets within striking distance. She jumped at it, pinning it to a wooden wall with her knife, where it turns to snow.]
We're gonna be hitting back. Hard. So we need everybody out of the way.
no subject
[ She's never gonna get them away from her horse at this rate. Killua sighs, walking closer steadily despite the way her horse is stepping around nervously, ready to kick. ]
What's with the ice monsters, though? And the ugly fairies?
no subject
[Ellie takes a step back. She hasn't wanted to resort to this, but she can't have some dumbass kid getting into the middle of this, and if one of these things bites Callus, she'll be even more pissed.]
Just stand back, will you?
[She hasn't wanted to go this route, simply because she's trying to keep her energy in reserve, but the fairies are thick enough to warrant it. She spreads her hands, and from her feet and all around her, vines explode from the earth. They wrap around the pixies, crushing them mercilessly. The air fills with macabre, tiny screams before most of them turn to snow.
Remarkably, Callus doesn't rear at this. He just tosses his head, stamping the earth, eyes rolling until the whites show.]

And his eyes widen in surprise at the sudden burst of violent plant life from the ground, clearly controlled by this girl. He whistles, almost impressed, and suddenly grins at her. ]
Cool.
no subject
Come on, kid. There's a safehouse down there a ways, I'm not gonna leave you out here to get chomped on.
no subject
Sounds boring. I'll pass.
Where'd you get a horse?
no subject
[A deafening cracking noise explodes across the street, and Ellie curses darkly, swinging herself up into the horse's saddle. The catapults are destroying more of the fucking walls.]
Fuck. We gotta get out of here. Are you coming, or what?
[She reaches down with one hand, ready to swing him up behind her.]
no subject
I don't want to go to the safehouse. I'm going with you. Sounds like more fun.
no subject
[Ellie bites back a curse. She can't bring him into this war zone, this isn't a game. But she doesn't have the time to sit around and argue this, either.]
Just hold on.
[She leans forward and gives Callus her heels. He's off like a shot, bounding towards the sounds of battle. She's going to kick herself later for this, she just knows it.]
Can you handle yourself, or are you just nuts? --shit! Hold on!
[Across the street, an ice golem comes smashing between two houses, tearing its way through an alleyway to get toward them, roaring as it comes. Callus gives a snort and picks up speed, but the damn thing is coming close behind him.]
no subject
[ Ellie's order goes unheeded. He's crouching on the horse's hind haunches with his hands still in his pockets, shifting his body with every movement so expertly that he seems to be standing still despite Callus' speed. ]
Shoot, it's fast. [ A lot faster than Killua had actually expected of a creature like that, not that he's seen anything like it before. Despite how Callus is galloping at full speed, Killua unfolds himself to stand in his spot now, turning to face toward the ice golem and calling back to Ellie. She can't answer his questions if she gets smashed by this monster, after all. ]
You can't run faster, can you?
formal agreement to use prose forever
Hell of a time to find out this kid basically isn't human, and can balance on the back of a horse while standing. Ellie curses again, whips them around a corner and kicks Callus back into a gallop while the golem crashes on behind them.
She throws out a hand and vines burst from the ground, loop up and firmly root themselves. The giant trips so hard it hits the ground and shatters everywhere into enormous, razor-sharp chunks of ice, and Ellie pulls Callus to a stop, gasping for breath.
"What the fuck kind of world are you from?"
no subject
The question only receives a shrug.
"I don't know. The normal kind. I didn't even know there were others before yesterday, y'know."
no subject
Ellie is still catching her breath, and Callus keeps walking, snorting and waving his tail, apparently fine with Killua standing on his back.
no subject
"Don't know what ninja school means, but I used to be an assassin. This is nothing."
no subject
At least Ellie and Clementine had the apocalypse as an excuse. What was with this kid?
"You wouldn't happen to know this dude named Desmond, would you?"
no subject
"No. Should I?"
no subject
Ellie pulls the horse around, taking a deep breath. "Look. I'm gonna head out into the fighting. I can't be watching your back while I'm out there."
no subject
"I've got nothing better to do. If you need a hand, I'll tag along." He's also really upset about being here, so fighting something sounds like a good opportunity to vent.
no subject
"If you could help out somehow, we'd have a better chance."
She turns to look over her shoulder, all seriousness, and she feels Joel could out of her mouth. Hates it, but it is what it is.
"Stay back and don't take any stupid risks. Can you do that?"
no subject
"I think I can help, but I need a little more info on what we're fighting. I've never encountered creatures like this before.
"What are they after? Do they have known weaknesses?" It's not like he can use plants like her, after all, but he's got plenty of other ways to fight, even if he's limited to hand-to-hand without his nen.
no subject
Ellie doesn't say how she knows that, but she does look at him carefully, guarded. No. No kid should look like that. He's going to be one to watch.
"Do you have body control or shadow control?"
It's a powerset she's all too familiar with. Enough to give him advice.
no subject
"Shadow control, apparently. I have no idea how to use it, though. I was planning on just using my body. If I hit ice hard enough, I figure it'll shatter."
no subject
Ellie snorts, then takes a moment to think. "You can probably make a weapon if you need one, it's gonna be stronger than your body. You can also use your own shadow to keep watch, I think."
Man, this would be easier if he had body control.
"Not all that exciting at first."
no subject
"Wait, why did you guess one of those two? You have plants, and I think I heard about others." He frowned, giving her a look as if to say suspicious.
no subject
"I've got enough friends there to know that color. Now get off my damn horse, I've gotta get over that wall."
