CHRISTMAS IN JULY: PART 2

CHRISTMAS IN JULY, PART TWO;
Days 478-479 (July 13-16th)

Day 478 (July 14): Following a network post announcing an impending attack by ice giants and Thiazi's declaration to the city, the fight begins when a small swarm of pixies descends upon the city, no more than eight inches tall and the definition of "glass cannons." They create chaos however they can: shaking snow onto people, carrying off weapons, and attacking directly if approached without an easy exit. Their teeth are curved like fangs and razor-sharp.

While the pixies stir the city up, the frost giants begin to load the golems up into the catapults. Two by two, the massive ice creatures come crashing - literally - into the city. They land hard and inaccurately, as the engineers' defenses on the city walls keep the giants from approaching too quickly, and some golems seem to be damaged already by the same defenses as they land. The pixies seem to lose interest around sunset (though you may find one or two hidden and sleeping in a snowbank if you look hard enough - they'll attack aggressively if woken), but the fights with the golems continue well into the night, until all in the city are dispatched. Where the pixies turn into snow, the golems transform into large hunks of ice after they are killed.
Day 479 (July 15-16): At sunrise, the pixies ascend from their hiding places and scatter, doing their best to break into homes to attack people directly. Today, anyone who finds himself bitten will begin to feel and act strangely.

Ice golems continue to come crashing into the city throughout the morning. All of the original ones slain, Thiazi begins creating more on the spot: while they may be more numerous, they are weaker, and many have odd physical defects. Some are missing arms, and others have extra heads. Following an attack by the strike team, the number itself will begin to thin considerably as one of the catapults is damaged and the other is destroyed completely.

Just before sunset, Thiazi delivers a final message and makes a hasty retreat with her entourage of frost giants. The spell responsible for the odd weather breaks the moment that she passes the threshold a half mile out, and all remaining pixies and golems in the city immediately, mid-action, turn to snow and ice.

By midnight, the city is thawed completely.

[She didn't scream into the leather and the grip only tightened a very small amount when the worst of the bones set itself. Her eyes rolled back for a second and Namine would feel nails digging into her skin but relaxing a moment later. However, though she grunted and gave the smallest of whimpers, the half-breed seemed to have an almost scary tolerance for pain.

She gave a small nod, as if saying to continue. She could handle this.]

[Truthfully, she isn't certain whether to be more concerned or less - but at least Samantha seems to be faring well. Better than expected, if Naminé is honest. (She is.) The nails pressing into her skin is a small, acceptable discomfort.]

You're doing great.

[And she does continue, doing Samantha the favor of not pausing and thereby prolonging things - though of course she's keeping an eye out for any sign she should stop.]

[As Naminé continued, Samantha began to hiss, but she never quite paled. Each rib in succession shifted and finally the worst was done and the damage being healead more easily. A few beads of sweat were there, but her fingers relaxed and she sighed a little.]

I... wish that wasn't so easy for me sometimes.

[Naminé sighs a bit more than that, and when she relaxes into the less difficult work it's with some suggestion of tiring. Still, she manages a smile.]

... I'm not sure I disagree with you, but-- maybe it's better not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

No, I already know where it comes from. It isn't worth thinking about too much. [She settled herself up, coughing once and wincing a little before getting comfortable enough to stay in a seated position.]

Thank you, Naminé. I guess you're the one doing the rescuing today.

[Naminé's hands hover as if in promise of support if it looks like she needs it. Samantha seems to manage well enough on her own, however, and the other girl lets them fall.] I'll... um. Try not to, then.

[Sitting back in her place, she recovers her smile.] Well, not entirely. You took care of some things earlier too, you know.

I did, but the one whose hide got saved here was me, not you. [She smiled and took the support offered before grunting and looking around once.]

We should get back. It would be a risk to stay here longer.

Mm-- details.

[She pauses, considering the other girl a moment or two, as if seriously thinking about suggesting she not do too much moving on her own power even if she has been healed, but-- in the end, she shakes her head slightly to banish her thoughts and says instead,]

You're right. I think we've done as much as we can here, for now.

Sorry we can't be much more help, but too much healing isn't good even if you get the power. Let's just be careful getting back. We'll stick to the alleyways, ok?

I know. [It's quiet, though - because truthfully, if not for Samantha, she'd be pushing herself much further than she ought to. It has just become her way.]

... Yes, I suppose that would be for the best. I've still got bullets, though, just in case.

[Samantha nodded, holding her gun up. It was still working at the very least.] I haven't fired many shots, I don't think so I can help keep them away too.

I'm good to fire it either way.

[She wasn't going to actually say it, but she knew that her friend would go too far with her healing if she wasn't careful. Using her own injury as an excuse was just a perfectly good way to make sure she kept her safe, even from herself.]

Good. Let's just... hope there aren't too many of those pixies. Trying to hit them is a huge pain.

[And maybe she had some inkling of how intentional it was; she was, after all, a clever girl. In any case,]

Do you, um-- are you comfortable walking? On your own, I mean?

[~~Because it's not like she can't be used as a crutch.~~]

[Samantha looked over at her friend for a long moment and swallowed. She could probably walk just fine right now. Her ribs ached some, but it wasn't that bad. At the same time...]

Maybe it would be ok to lean on you for a little while?

[~~Yeah, she was totally taking that excuse.~~]

[Naminé looks back, the picture of genuine though quiet concern.]

I wouldn't mind, if that makes things easier for you...!

[~~Shame on you, Samantha.~~]

[She leaned on her lightly, her body very light considering her size. Walking steadily enough she let Naminé support her as they went, keeping an eye out. It wasn't very good of her, but she also knew that she wasn't likely to get physical contact with her friend that often otherwise, so she used that as a justification.]

Thanks. It's good we have each other today, mmm?

[Naminé is a light girl, herself, and small to boot, so she's better off at least that Samantha doesn't seem to need too much support. (If any.)]

Of course. I like to think it is any other day, too.

[~~Not one bit. She was being a little manipulative here.~~

At the very least, she wasn't putting much weight or pressure on Naminé while they walked, and by keeping low to the shadows, they were having luck avoiding the fairies. It wouldn't be long for them to return, not with the more direct path Samantha was taking.]

Always. I don't really know what I'd do without you sometimes. [A mild exaggeration, but it felt like the thing to say.]

[~~She's lucky Naminé's not the type to accuse.~~]

[She's more than a little relieved that things have been turning out relatively well so far, but that doesn't mean she's off her guard.]

[Exaggeration, indeed - which is probably why there's that huff of an almost-laugh as she turns to glance at her friend.] Get into even more trouble than you already do? [And it's clearly a joke, because she's not quite as quick as she perhaps ought to be to take such a compliment seriously.]

[~~So very lucky. So very lucky.~~]

[She snorted and nodded. It was true. That was what their friendship had done for her. It helped her to avoid getting into too much trouble most of the time, along with everything else.

Maybe just a little bit, yeah. You're like my conscience sometimes. I'd miss you too, but I'm sure I'd get into all kinds of stupidity if you weren't there to tell me to have some sense.

You probably would.

[That part is still full of amusement, but after a moment she begins to ease her way back into a less joking tone.]

But you've already got your own conscience. I guess it just... could use a little backup, sometimes. And-- I'd also miss you. If you weren't here, I probably wouldn't get out as much, either.

We can't have that, you know. The city needs your sunny little smile, even if you don't always feel it. So you keep helping my conscience and I'll keep dragging you out of your home.

I don't think it's that impressive. [But there's a sunny little smile all the same, just to prove Samantha's point.] ... But-- yeah. I think I like that plan, if you do. And I'll just keep patching you up after you do the heavy lifting.

[She chuckled softly when they reached the road. Not far away, they could see the main stations set up for the healers.]

Sounds like a plan. Ready to make a break for it? I think I can do the last leg on my own.

[It's a relief, truthfully, to see it.]

Yeah - I'm ready if you are.

[And she's also careful to make sure Samantha's steady on her feet before stepping back.]

[Samantha took point, but thankfully as they made their way towards the others, the sounds of giggling were distant. Those fairies that were in the area were staying away from larger congregations out of survival and the ice golems weren't getting this deep. They'd be able to make their way in close safely, and finally get some rest.]

(OOC: Handwave a conclusion and I poke you today or tomorrow for a new thread? ^_^, we do such long threads.)
