EVENT LOG: TAKING THE HOBBITS TO VANAHEIM

Who: Everyone going to Vanaheim!
What: We're Taking the Hobbits to Vanaheim. Part Two of this log can be found here!
When: Days 324-334 ( September 10-30 )
Where: On the way to, the way back from, and in the city of Vanaheim.
Rating: PG-13. Anything that might go higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

[ Vanaheim is a truly medieval-looking city and a close ally of Asgard. The city prides itself on tradition and knowledge, with great libraries and a prestigious academy of music and theatre. Residents are mostly a mix of human and elven, and the rulers are a group of the same kind of beings as the Gods of Asgard. Freya & Freyr originally hail from this city -- their coming to Asgard was part of a long-ago peace treaty between Odin and their father: the King of Vanaheim.

Freyr and Freya have been summoned home to Vanaheim, and they have asked any interested traveler in Asgard to come with them. The trip will involve a full IC day's travel by floating Elven train each way, and a five IC day stay in Vanaheim proper. They will be met with a large banquet in the castle courtyard, ushered to large and comfortable rooms in the palace to leave their things and rest in, and given a comfortable spending allowance for any sort of bauble or trinket that they would like to purchase.

The citizens of the city are friendly, but almost condescendingly so. Some will gawk and stare at the travelers; others will speak to them in cooing, coddling tones; others still regard them with open but vague pity, as if not expecting them to understand. Almost all of them will treat them like uncultured, idiot children, and will assume they have no manners and no sense of social intelligence, and will be visibly surprised if they are proven wrong.

Characters will not be babysat or watched over, and will be allowed to go anywhere within the city that they'd like (though any who try to leave will be stopped by stern and chastising guards.)

[ OOC NOTES: This is the mingle log for the Vanaheim travel event! There will be several location headers below with further details on places in the city and events that your characters can visit and participate in. If there is something particular you'd like to do or see that is not listed below, please let us know!! There will be NPCs out and about, but if there is something you specifically want an NPC to tag, please drop us a line or put it in your comment title.

Signups for this are not required and open to everyone, but keep in mind that if your character is in Vanaheim, they will not be around for a majority of the Bad Moon Rising plot. Traditional prose and [bracket-style threads] are both equally welcome! As always, please feel free to ask us any questions you have.

And useful. Is that from this world or your own?

[There were a lot of things in Asgard that reminded him of home—his actual home—but they definitely didn't run the same way. Sure, Asgard wasn't in great shape, but they definitely weren't screwed for the same reason.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's mine. Doesn't leave my side. But you can get one in Asgard, just a shitty one.

[He still remembers having to depend on Bics - not even Bics, but knockoffs. Not a great time in his Asgard life.

But anyway.]

So what's the deal with your world. Way in the past, or just not that up on technology in general? 'Cause the Zippo's a pretty old model.

Everything we do requires this stuff called mana. Things here don't work the same way.

[Alvin had checked out a few books on science, and though some of it seemed interesting, most of it gave him the indication that he'd have to start from scratch on all that stuff. And he had started a little more advanced.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-13 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Mana? Never heard of it. How do you use it?

[He's only vaguely interested, but it's something to do around here.]
trustexercises: (whoa. okay. i'll learn them.)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-13 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Alvin really hates explaining this, but here goes.]

In my world, there's a great circle of life. Since some people have mana lobes, they can use it to communicate with spirits, who are on the other end. And with that, they can use artes through communicating with the spirits. Well, spirit artes.

[He shrugs it off.]

It's all very, very complicated. And nothing I can do, actually.

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds way too complicated. I'll take technology and evolution over "communicating with spirits" any day.

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-13 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, some worlds don't have that option. And the gods here? They aren't willing to change things up.

[Because while he didn't get the books, he did get one thing: if they could work that kind of science in his world, it would mean lots of good things for humanity.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-13 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're telling me. [His eyes harden.] There's a hell of a lot in my world that they're not big on having around either. I've tried almost everything.
trustexercises: (oh. personal space. got it.)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[That wasn't exactly what Alvin was getting at, but now he's curious.] What do you mean?

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-14 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Powers don't come so easy back home. [He flicks the zippo on again.] You've gotta be one of the more highly evolved, not just get one handed to you by a god. And they're stronger, they make the shit in Asgard look like smoke and mirrors.

Of course that means they don't want mutants having their actual abilities. We'd be way too strong to control.
trustexercises: (005)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-14 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, so you think the whole bit about powers being bad is a lie? [Alvin hadn't actually thought too much about it. He isn't used to having powers himself, what with the whole lack of mana lobe and all.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-14 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
[He's been fighting this fight for so long that he barely knows what he believes anymore. All he knows is that every day spent as a near-human makes his skin crawl, and being without his fire will never be fixed by plugging the whole with regeneration. Even now that he can regrow limbs.]

Too much of a coincidence. [He shakes his head, choosing his original theory for now.] We'd be better equipped for the war with abilities we actually know, but then we'd be strong enough to back them into a corner. And we're a captive army, so that's a real risk. So the whole "oh, it'll kill you if you stay what you were at home!" thing? Smells like bullshit to me.

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't you overlooking something? [Alvin doesn't want to point it out, but he wonders if this guy has thought it through beyond his own personal biases.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-14 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, let's see if you can convince me. Go for it.
trustexercises: (083)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-14 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Why bother bringing in someone just to stamp out their powers? There are full armies from lots of worlds that don't have any. [EXODUS' would be a good place to start, he thinks. Their tools would work well, but they likely wouldn't threaten Asgard.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-14 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[That -

- Goddamnit, that's a really good question. If they were just gonna stock up whoever came in with their own powers, why not bring the Marines or something? Seasoned soldiers, fierce fighters, with the need to learn a new skill set but no bitterness about losing their old one. Human armies may be mostly useless against mutants (see: attacking a school full of kids and still missing most of them), but if control is all the gods want, they'd be more malleable.]

Culture shock. They probably figured someone who already knew about something other than shooting or stabbing would adjust to their new powers better. Just didn't figure in that they might be attached to what they could already do.

[It's an argument, at least, even if it's weak.]
trustexercises: (008)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-14 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
What if I told you I was nothing more than a hired sword myself? I don't have any powers. I'm adjusting just fine. [Alvin knows he's exaggerating the tiniest bit, but he definitely doesn't have the ability to cast spirit artes like some people. He'll never have that gift.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-16 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Then they're obviously bigger dumbasses than I thought.

[He sniffs, looking away. It's annoying to have another hole punched in his theory - beyond annoying, it's almost scary, because he's seen that this may be the last place he has any hope of clinging to his mutation. Back home, they're stealing them with single bullets.]
trustexercises: (046)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-16 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, it depends.

[He shrugs, not wanting to let on too much.]

I bet I'd take you in a fight easily. I wouldn't call that stupid.

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
[His eyes light up.]

That a challenge?
trustexercises: (whoa. okay. i'll learn them.)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-17 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, why not? A friendly spar with the two of us. I'll take it easy on you.

[Looking at him, he has a feeling he's going to have to, or else it'll get ugly.]

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-18 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Call me when we get back. And if you go easy on me, I'll make you sorry.
trustexercises: (083)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-19 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sure thing.

And let's see if you need to have me take it easy on you first. How's that sound?

[personal profile] ex_outofcontrol435 2013-09-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's cute.

[Shut up, Pyro, you're still training in conventional weapons.]

See you at the arena.

[And with that, he moves to mingle, because obviously hiding in this corner is just drawing more attention to himself.]
trustexercises: (059)

[personal profile] trustexercises 2013-09-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
[He waves him off, thinking to himself how ridiculous that guy looked.]
